LOUISVILLE (AP) - The 139th Run for the Roses takes place today at Churchill Downs and the favorites in the Kentucky Derby are Orb and unbeaten Verrazano. The forecast for Louisville calls for occasional rain. A field of 19 will race in the opening leg of horse racing's Triple Crown.
Rosie Napravnik is riding longshot Mylite. The 25-year old Napravnik is trying to become the first female jockey to win the Derby.
Kevin Krigger is on Goldencents and he is trying to become the first African-American to win the Derby since Jimmy Winkfield won back in 1901 and 1902. Louisville basketball coach Rick Pitino is a minority owner of Goldencents.
Legendary Churchill Downs has a new look this year including something called the Mansion, which features VIP seating for spectators that want to shell out several thousand dollars to watch the two-minute race.
