Former EKU professor convicted of drug charge

LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) - A former Eastern Kentucky University professor who resigned after being arrested on a marijuana charge has been convicted of trafficking.

The Richmond Register (http://bit.ly/UHM6Br) reports a jury found 63-year-old Larry Belknap guilty of trafficking in more than 8 ounces but less than 5 pounds of the drug after deliberating Tuesday for nearly five hours. They recommended a one-year sentence.

State police said officers arrested Belknap at his Richmond home after searching it and finding 8 pounds of marijuana.

Belknap testified during the trial that he grew marijuana for personal use and sometimes shared it with others.

Belknap was a tenured member of the university's Department of Recreation and Park Administration. He had taught undergraduate courses in subjects such as outdoor recreation, park management, and interpretive services.
