Former Kentucky First Lady Martha Wilkinson dies

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - WKYT has learned former Kentucky First Lady Martha Wilkinson died Wednesday at a hospital in Sarasota, Florida.

She was the wife of former Kentucky Governor Wallace Wilkinson who was served from 1987 until 1991. The couple married in 1960.

"She was determined. She was fiesty. She was extremely down to earth," said WKYT political editor Bill Bryant. "She and her husband worked side by side in business and then in politics until his death."

While first lady, Martha Wilkinson aimed to fight adult illiteracy by creating a group called "Martha's Army."

For a brief time, she herself was a candidate to succeed her husband as governor because at the time Kentucky had a one-term limit for governors.
