Grandmother charged after child left alone at Corbin McDonald's

CORBIN, Ky. (WKYT) - Police spent hours Thursday night looking for the family of a 4-year-old boy they say was left alone at a McDonald's.

They say the boy, named Kevin, ran around the McDonald's parking lot without a coat for 15 to 20 minutes, before police were called.

Corbin Police say Kevin couldn't provide them with his parents' names, or his address.

"He knew his name, and that's about it," Corbin Police Officer Rob Jones said.

Police then turned to social media, and WKYT, for help. They released a picture of Kevin, hoping his family would see it and contact them.

"We actually put it out on the city's Facebook page, and the aunt said 'That's my nephew,'" Jones said.

Shortly after, Corbin Police tracked down the boy's grandmother, 62-year-old Joanne Lowe, who had custody of him.

Police say the boy's family told them they simply forgot about him at the McDonald's on Cumberland Falls Highway.

For now, police say custody has been taken away from the grandmother, and put into the hands of the state.

Corbin Police also charged Lowe with endangering the welfare of a minor.

Police stressed how important it is for children to learn their basic information in case of a situation like this.
