Members of four fire departments helped battle a large fire in the Salt Lick community of Bath County. The fire started around ten Monday morning at White Manufacturing. The lumber company is located along Main Street.
"Everything we've worked for is gone," said Timmy Charles.
Charles is one of several employees who tried to knock down the fire with extinguishers, but it spread quickly.
"When the extinguishers went down, I felt the heat hit me in the face, I knew there wasn't anything else I could do," said Charles.
So the 17-year-employee had to watch the longtime business burn to the ground.
"It's just a very-very sad day in Salt Lick," said Shelley Thompson.
Thompson videotaped the fire on her cellphone.
"I've never seen a fire spread so quickly, it's just devastating," she said.
All six-employees made it out safely, but the main building and most of the contents inside were destroyed.
The building was full hard woods and other highly flammable material, making it difficult even for fire fighters.
The structure and the thousands of dollars worth of materials were destroyed.
Investigators believe an air compressor may have started the fire. No foul play is expected.
