FRANKLIN COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT) - A Franklin County couple is in jail, accused of being high on drugs with a child in the car.
The sheriff's office says they found Paul and Christie Rearden passed out inside their running car Monday afternoon. Deputies say the car was stopped in the middle of St. Clair Street, right in front of the courthouse.
The sheriff's office says when Lt. Russ Sparks knocked on the window, Paul Rearden regained consciousness and the car began rolling forward. Sparks was able to reach into the car and put it in park.
Officials found an infant in the back seat. The boy is less than one-year-old and was not the Reardens' son. Officials say the couple was on their way to pick up the boy's young sister.
"There's no telling what could have happened," said Sheriff Pat Melton.
After searching the car, the sheriff's office says they found a large amount of oxycodone.
"The guys did a great job of getting down there and taking them in custody and getting the child safe," said Melton.
The couple faces several charges including trafficking a controlled substance and criminal abuse.
They pleaded not guilty to those charges on Tuesday.
Christie Rearden was arrested a year ago for something similar. An arrest citation says she passed out in her car while on drugs with her own son in the car.
Cash bonds are set for the couple. Paul Rearden's is set at $30,220.50. Christie's bond is set at $20,100.
The couple declined WKYT's request for an interview.
