Franklin Co. woman pleads guilty to animal cruelty charges

Updated: Wed 6:46 PM, Feb 27, 2013

FRANKLIN COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT) - A Franklin County woman arrested after police found dozens of animals at her farm in bad shape has pleaded guilty.

The humane society says Sandra Coy entered the guilty plea on numerous misdemeanor animal cruelty charges in court on Tuesday.

"Speechless. We didn't know what to think, it was a wonderful surprise," said Franklin County Humane Society shelter manager Nancy Benton.

The Franklin County Sheriff's office arrested Sandra Coy and her husband in August 2012 after a tip of animals in bad shape at their farm. Investigators seized dogs, birds, alpacas, chickens and pigs.

William Coy pleaded guilty to the charges in October.

As part of her sentence, the humane society says Ms. Coy was ordered to surrender ownership of all of the animals seized from her property. She is also prevented from owning any animals in the state of Kentucky for two years.

Benton says the cost of keeping the 18 dogs still at the shelter has been in the tens of thousands.

"We're just really relieved emotionally as well because it was difficult watching them day after day deteriorate in these cages, wanting to socialize, wanting to play," she said.

The Franklin County Humane Society will now be allowed to start the process of adoption for animals taken from the Coy's farm. Only the animals that have recovered fully will be up for adoption.
