Fraternal Order of Police Reps say Crime is up in Lexington

Numbers released by the FOP are staggering. They are claiming an almost 9.5 percent increase in crimes ranging from Murders to car break-ins in the last year.

"We're not trying to create a doom and gloom atmosphere," explained President of the FOP Mike Sweeney. "But the statistics speak for themselves."

In a time when the Lexington Police Department has seen some cuts, Sweeney says the cost is coming at the public's safety.

"The bottom line is the number of officers out there taking calls is not increasing... And the number of calls they are taking is going up drastically."

Sweeney says he and other members of the FOP continuously meet to discuss the safety numbers. He says publislishing them on their website "KeepLexingtonSafe.org" is an effort to raise awareness in the public.

When asked about the statistics the FOP released, Lexington Mayor Jim Gray says everything appears to be fine.

"Our police chief continues to assure me that we have one of the Best Public Safety Records in the state and in the country---That's been re-assuring to me," Gray explained.

Both sides do agree these newly released numbers come at a time when tensions are high between the city and FOP due to collective bargaining.
