LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) -- Old, rotting tires are something no one wants to see hanging around their property. This weekend only, you can get rid of them for free.
Tires came in by the truck load on Thursday which was the first day of a tire roundup event. It's a unique opportunity offered by the Fayette County Division of Waste Management.
"It's a state funded program that happens every 3 years. And basically anybody from the community including businesses can bring tires here," says Esther Moberly, Recycling Program Specialist.
Tires will not be accepted from tire retailers. Bring any passenger vehicle or tractor tires as long as they are not calcium or foam filled, don't have press on rims, and are not solid or have a lot of wiring.
"Instead of them having to dispose of them illegally they can bring them here and have it done properly," says Moberly.
It's not just for residents of Fayette County but all of Central KY. After this weekend the tires will be sent to a company in Louisville where they will be shredded and used for playgrounds or athletic fields. The Division of Waste Management will only be taking tires this weekend. The tire roundup is located at 1631 Old Frankfort Pike Friday and Saturday from 7 am to 5 pm.
