MOREHEAD, Ky (WKYT) - A neighbor of Cassie Owens says he saw her boyfriend, Casey Shay, just hours before he turned himself in to police. The neighbor said Shay waived at him like there was nothing wrong. Police say at that moment Owens was already dead, having been shot by Shay the day before.
Morehead Police say 26-year-old Casey Shay went to the Rowan County Detention center Thursday and told workers there he had killed his girlfriend, 21-year-old Cassie Owens.
Police rushed to Owens' home on Christian Street where they found her body. She had been shot twice.
"I was shocked. I couldn't even imagine what went wrong, what could have happened to cause something like that," said Nadine Reedy who worked with Owens at the Huddle House in Morehead.
Her co-workers say the past day has been a tough one.
"The way we took it everybody was getting along. They had been on and off again for some time, but we thought everything was going good," said Sarah Arnett, one of Owens' friends who worked with her at the restaurant.
Police say Owens was actually shot on Wednesday, but Shay waited a day before turning himself in.
"This is devastating to both families. She loved her daughter so much," said Owens' grandmother Beverly Owens.
"She was a wonderful person, wonderful mother, came from a good family and we're just all in shock right now," Arnett said.
Cassie Owens and Casey Shay's young daughter is now staying with family members. Shay is charged with murder and is currently in the Rowan County Detention Center.
The director of the of the DOVES of Gateway program contacted WKYT after the story of the shooting aired. They serve five counties in Kentucky, including Rowan. She says help is available to anyone in a domestic situation by calling their toll free crisis hotline at 1-800-221-4361.
