LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - Friends and family of Derek Pelphrey, 23, are waiting for answers. They want to know who murdered him and why.

"He was one of the nicest people I knew. He could carry on a conversation for hours. He definitely did not deserve this," says Emily Latham, a friend of the victim.

Latham says she attended Tates Creek High School with Pelphrey. She lives in the neighborhood, where police say Pelphrey was gunned down Tuesday night.

"He had lots of friends in this area from Tates Creek," adds Latham.

Police say Pelphrey suffered from at least one gun shot wound to the neck. He died thirty minutes after the shooting at UK hospital.

The search continues for the shooter but police say as of now, they do not have any suspects in this murder.

Family of Pelphrey released this statement:
"Last night we lost a loved and cherished member of our family. Derek was a loyal son, brother and friend with a great heart. We were blessed to share his life. No parent should ever have to bury their child. We are devastated by his loss. As always, we place our faith in our Lord and savior, Jesus Christ. We ask respect for our privacy at this time of tremendous grief. Because of the ongoing investigation, we have no further comment."

"He didn't deserve it and everyone hopes this comes to an end sot he family can get some peace," says Latham.

Latham says some of Pelphrey's friends are working to organize a candlelight vigil in his honor.
