Friends remember cyclist killed in crash

GEORGETOWN, Ky. (WKYT) - Lawrence Crawford's family said he was a passionate man and he liked to share those passions. He was the director of music at Great Crossing Baptist Church. The other thing he loved to share with people was his cycling.

When churchgoers first heard about the accident involving a cyclist along US 25 Monday night, their thoughts went straight to one man.

"They had seen it on the news or heard about it on the news and the first thought they had was, 'I hope it's not Lawrence, surely it's not him,'," said Jennifer Mitchell.

Sadly, it was Lawrence Crawford, beloved music director at Great Crossing Baptist Church.

"He would play the saxophone for us. Clarinet, name it, I think he could play it. He was a very humble man. You would go up to him and go, 'Wow, you can really play the saxophone!' and he would just be like, 'Well...I get by,'," said Mitchell.

His other passion was riding his bicycle. Family members said he rode about 5,000 miles a year.

"We were just amazed at how far he'd ridden and gone," said Mitchell.

He didn't keep that passion to himself.

"He would work on our bikes for us here at the house, you know, we would take our bikes down there to him and he would make them brand new again," said Mitchell.

In fact, friends said the bike Crawford was riding at the time was one he had owned and maintained since he was a boy.

Churchgoers plan to have their weekly prayer meeting Wednesday night. They said they're expecting a big crowd. Crawford's visitation will be Thursday evening from 5:00 to 8:00 at Tucker Yocum Wilson Funeral Home. His funeral will be Friday morning at 11:00.
