A line of strong to severe storms will race across central and eastern Kentucky over the next several hours.
CORBIN, Ky. (WKYT) - Family and friends say a final farewell to a Kentucky airman. Air Force Staff Sergeant Dirk Shelton, 29, died earlier this month after an accident in Washington, D.C.
More than 1,000 people paid their respects to Shelton at Grace on the Hill Church in Corbin Thursday.
Staff Sgt. Shelton was in the Special Operations branch of the US Air Force and had been involved in missions around the world. He died from a head injury on July 13 while on a training mission in the Washington, DC area. Several members of his unit made the trip to Corbin to pay their respects.
"I've never seen a funeral as well attended as here today. The lines been out the door ever since 2pm. Obviously they're going to extend the hours for viewing just so everyone can pay their respects to the family and to dirk," said Lt. Col. James Clifford. Clifford said Staff Sergeant Shelton's unit will always remember his sense of humor.
Shelton leaves behind a wife.
