HAROLD, Ky. (WYMT) - Firemen in Floyd County gathered together Saturday to remember one of their own.

Volunteer firefighter Jonnathon Anderson died unexpectedly last week.

Fellow Firemen and officers gave 28 year old Anderson a formal goodbye at his funeral in Harold.

“To honor our fallen brother, that's what we're taught by our training, respect, dignity, honor, courage, that's what we're about,” said Brian White, with the Betsy Layne Fire Department.

Anderson died while working in Louisiana, and family members say the news was hard to take.

“Just shock you know, just couldn't believe it, still can't,” said Anderson’s nephew, Ryan Hall.

Anderson volunteered at both Betsy Layne and Toler Creek Fire Departments.

Officials say he is the first fireman to die while on active roster in 65 years, which has made it even harder for his fellow volunteers.

“There'll be a lost brother there and all of that, but I mean we have to pick up and go on. He'd want us to do that, we have to go on,” said White.

And even though he will be greatly missed, family members say they will never forget the kind of man he was.

“He is one of the greatest people that I know, and that he will always be remembered,” said Hall.

Someone they say deserved a final salute.

Firefighters continued the service with a last call ceremony at Gethsemane Gardens Cemetery in Prestonsburg.

He leaves behind two children.
