Things were looking relatively good at the pump. Prices were even comparable to this time last year. But a few days ago, that all changed.

Prices that were pushing $3.00 a gallon pushed on through to the $3.20 and $3.30 range.

"It's hard to understand why prices would go up 20 cents over night," said Lilla Mason with AAA of the Bluegrass.
"Consumers need to know what's the reason, how could this happen just when the holidays are coming?"

So Mason did some checking for us. She says not only did wholesale prices just go up about 26 cents in this area, but three refineries that supply the bluegrass are having problems.
"Anytime they have to shut down for even a day, if they are a supplier to 365,000 barrels of oil a day, it effects supply in this area and subsequently prices go up," Mason explained.

But AAA studies show even the higher prices at the pump won't stop drivers from driving this holiday, but it will start some holiday conversation.
