MT. VERNON, Ky. (WKYT) - An industrial building that appears empty now…is about to be filled up.

“To bring 150 new jobs here is going to make a huge impact on this economy and the people living here,” says Gov. Steve Beshear, D-Ky.

St. Louis based Anchor Packaging officials say they are establishing operations in Mt. Vernon, with 30 new jobs right away, and dozens more later. The governor says it’s another small step in reversing the trend of job losses.

“We have that unemployment rate dropping every month now. It’s now down to 7.7%. It was all the way up to 11%,” said Beshear.

The company president says it chose Mt. Vernon because of its people and the local workforce.

“Our workforce so far is really great and our people really care about the getting the job done and in a quality way,” said Anchor Packaging President and CEO Bob Herman.

The Mt. Vernon workers will join 1,000 who work for Anchor’s 7 locations. Gov. Beshear says $7.6 million is being invested in the local company.
