FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) - Two Republicans have announced they will seek their party's nomination for a state Senate seat left vacant by former longtime Senate President David Williams, who has been appointed circuit judge.

State Rep. Sara Beth Gregory and Albany lawyer David Cross said Wednesday they seek the seat.

Gregory, a Monticello lawyer, is in her first term as state representative. She was re-elected to that post Tuesday without opposition.

Cross has never sought public office.

Gregory, who is also a lawyer, told the Lexington Herald-Leader she wants to work in the Senate to develop the district, fight drug abuse and protect the region's values.

Cross said he wouldn't stand in the way of redistricting in the upcoming legislative session if he's elected.

Gov. Steve Beshear hasn't yet scheduled a special election.
