Audit: school district sent food workers to Vegas

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) - A report from the state auditor says a northern Kentucky school district spent excessive amounts on out-of-state travel and was lax in monitoring its finances.

The report by State Auditor Adam Edelen's office says Kenton County School District's food services department has spent $116,388 on out-of-state travel since 2007. The 16-page report says 46 employees attended the same conference in Las Vegas in 2009 and 27 employees attended a conference in Nashville last year. Those trips cost the district $59,000.

The report says Kenton County's Board of Education acknowledged that it is unnecessary to send that many employees to a conference. School officials say they were not aware of many of the out-of-state trips.

The auditor's office said it initiated the investigation after receiving citizen complaints about travel and procurement.
