Ground broken on construction of new house for war hero

JESSAMINE, Ky. - A crew broke ground on the construction of a new home for wounded Marine Corporal Matt Bradford today.

Corporal Bradford lost both legs and his eyesight after stepping on an IED in Iraq.

Friends and family gathered in Jessamine County to witness the ground-breaking ceremony for the new home being built for Corporal Bradford and his family by the organization Helping a Hero.

Several special guests were also there, including Senator Rand Paul, who spoke to WKYT's Kari Hall.

"He's a really brave young man who's been through a lot and had his injuries from the war but doesn't seemed to be stopped," said Senator Paul. "So it's more than courage on the battlefield, and he's able to move forward with his life."

The planned four bedroom, one level house on a one acre lot will be wheel-chair accessible and equipped with voice activated electronics. It will feature wider doors and a roll in shower.

Though Corporal Matt Bradford won't be able to see his new home, his wife and three daughters will be by his side.

"My wife is right there," said Corporal Bradford. "She's my eyes for everything, she's great at telling me what's around, and she knows what I would like."

In about four months, the war hero and his family will have a nearly 3,000 square foot home in which to create new memories.
