HARLAN, Ky. (WKYT) - We’re continuing to track new details about a disturbing story out of Harlan County that has many outraged.
We’re getting a closer look into the disturbing details of what happened at Connie Jenkins’ Harlan County home the night of March 25th.
“A 3-year-old innocent child doesn’t deserve to be treated like this at all,” said Portia Bearden, the victim’s aunt.
Deputies say on March 25hth, Jenkins' live-in boyfriend, Randy Hammons, used cruel and unusual punishment on her 3-year-old grandson.
“The child said after he was whipped severely by Mr. Hammons, he couldn’t stop crying and Mr. Hammons was mad and stuck him in a freezer and held the lid shut,” said Harlan County Sheriff Marvin Lipfird.
When Jenkins and Hammons learned that police were on the way to their house, deputies say they tried to cover their tracks.
“They had attempted to conceal some of the child’s bruising and injuries by putting makeup on the child. The makeup trying to hide it contained glitter and we immediately noticed the glitter on the child’s face,” said Sheriff’s Deputy Matt Cope.
Jenkins' family tells us this isn't the first time Hammons has abused the kids.
“He has hit them, grabbed them by both of their ears, thrown them down and hang them upside down on a door frame and tells them he is going to fall and hit their head,” Bearden said.
Now Hammons is the one being punished for his crime; he faces charges of criminal abuse 1st degree and attempted murder.
“He needs to fry. He needs to be where he's at right now and plus somebody do him like he did that baby,” Bearden told us.
The little boy's grandmother, Connie Jenkins, was home when the incident happened and she is also charged with 1st degree criminal abuse.
Both Jenkins and Hammons are being held in the Harlan County Detention Center.
