Rugby players speak out about hazing investigation

Updated: Thu 3:18 AM, Oct 25, 2012

Members of the EKU rugby team said they'd like to prepare for their next game, but instead they're suspended from even holding a meeting after someone came forward with an accusation of hazing within the team.

The players say they have no idea what the accusation is.

"Never seen us do anything that would make anyone feel excluded or degraded," said an officer and former president of the club team, Tyler Farrell.

The complaint, though, was serious enough that the university launched an investigation. Right now, the team isn't allowed to hold meetings, practices, or games while the University Hazing Investigation Commission looks into the complaint. An EKU spokesperson says the investigation could take days or even weeks. This comes right in the middle of the fall rugby season.

"We just came off a win. We're going to lose that momentum. And we're not sure if we can hang out, if that would be misconstrued as meeting," said Zak Boylan.

Tyler Farrell says the team does have traditions and rituals, but they don't involve embarrassing people. He says they bring the team closer together.

"We're like a family. Out of all the organizations, sororities, frats...I don't know them all, but I think we're one of, if not the most tight-knit," said Farrell.

The next scheduled game was the first Saturday in November. The players don't know if they'll be able to have that game.
