Hearing held to discuss future of embattled school board chair
Embattled school board member fights for position
Bill Boyd stepped down as chairman of the Bath County School Board last month, but he is still a board member.
He went before the Kentucky Board of Education today in Frankfort, after Kentucky Education Commissioner Terry Holiday accused him of neglecting his duties and violating open meetings laws.
Holiday has recommended Boyd be removed from the school board. However, Boyd says he's done nothing wrong.
Among the accusations against Boyd is one that he violated the state's open meetings law, which prohibits doing public business in secret.
This is all the result of an investigation launched by the Kentucky Education Accountability Office earlier this summer.
The report said on several occasions, Boyd conducted business in private with other board members, which should have been discussed in an open meeting.
The report claimed that created the appearance Boyd was hiding something from the public.
In a recent interview, Boyd said he will fight any decision that would remove him from his position.
"I'm fairly confident that they will rule in my favor, and if they don't, then we will appeal to court," Boyd said.
Boyd claims this is nothing more than an attack by people in his school district who don't agree with some of his decisions.
On Wednesday night, the board decided to suspend Boyd for 90 days. He is discouraged from attending school board meetings during that time. He can appeal the decision to the Bath County Circuit Court.
