High school holding benefit for Fleming County teen killed while hunting

FLEMINGSBURG, Ky. (WKYT) - Organizers of the fundraiser call Fleming County a small community with a giant heart. They say they want Ricky Hamilton, Jr's family to know they have their support.

It's been a little more than a week now since a four-day search for Ricky Hamilton, Jr. ended tragically. Just as they did during the search, the Fleming County community is coming together to support Hamilton's family.

"We just want them to know how much we love Ricky and how much their family will still be a part of our high school football family," said Mary Burnett.

Burnett is one of the Fleming County High School football boosters. Hamilton was a sophomore member of the Panther football team. Burnett's planning a chili dinner to benefit Hamilton's family on December 14.

"Any expenses that we can help them with. We just want them to know how much our community loves them," she said.

Burnett's sons Heath and Maverick played alongside Hamilton.

"Ricky was just...he went hard every single play. He was the type of guy you want on your football team," said Heath Burnett.

"He would get the ball one day and we were just pounding him and pounding him. He would get up and he'd always be ready for the next play. The next day he came out there and it didn't seem like anyone could tackle him," said Maverick Burnett.

They say they want this fundraiser to show Hamilton's family how much they care.

"We want to be there for them in the long run, not just for these few days. It's going to be tough throughout the holidays, but we're going to be there to show our love and support and let them know the good memories that we have of Ricky and how special he was to all of us," said Maverick Burnett.

There's also a big basketball game at the high school that night. Burnett hopes that will bring in a big crowd. The chili dinner will be in the Fleming County High School cafeteria December 14 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM.
