Homeowner missing after Madison County fire

More Video...

MADISON COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT) Firefighters say they believe the homeowner of a log cabin that caught fire early Thursday morning in Madison County may still be inside.

Officials say they were called to the scene on Whitlock Road in northern Madison County around 1:00 on Thursday morning. They were unable to enter the log cabin home and had to knock the fire down from outside. The home was destroyed by the fire.

The Madison County Fire Department said they had to call in additional support from three volunteer fire departments because the fire was seven miles from the nearest hydrant and they did not have enough water.

Firefighters had to wait until dawn to search the remains of the building, and additional water tankers were needed to put out the rest of the smoldering fire.

The ex-wife of the victim tells us the man who lives at the home is Walt Liebengood. His family says they are no stranger to tragedy.

Liebengood's daughter-in-law, Megan Liebengood, was murdered outside her Lexington apartment in 2004.

The homeowner has not yet been found.
