HOPKINSVILLE, Ky. (AP) - Officials in another western Kentucky city have taken a preliminary vote to ban smoking.

The Kentucky New Era (http://bit.ly/UbULwZ) reports the Hopkinsville City Council narrowly passed a first reading of the measure during a meeting Tuesday night in which the mayor cast the deciding vote. A second reading must be approved before the law takes effect.

Mayor Don Kemp called the move "progress" and noted that it puts the city in line with others in western Kentucky that have also passed bans, including Paducah, Owensboro and Henderson.

Those opposed to the ban said they didn't want to take rights away from business owners.
