Horse of the Year winner in serious condition at equine hospital

WOODFORD COUNTY, KY - Retired racehorse Rachel Alexandra is in serious, but stable condition following complications from the birth of her filly.

The 2009 "Horse of the Year" had surgery to repair an area of bruising in her small colon.

Doctors at Rood and Riddle Equine Clinic say it's too early to determine her prognosis and that they're monitoring her response to treatment.

Experts in equine sports were equally interested in the horse's health outcome. "Now that she's breeding, it's really important for them to keep her healthy, obviously," said WKYT's sports reporter, Dick Gabriel. "And I'll be curious to see how her latest foal turns out because it's not very often that one Preakness winner breeds another Preakness winner."

Rachel Alexandra's filly by Bernadini was born Tuesday.

Last year, Rachel Alexandra gave birth to a colt by two-time horse of the year Curlin.
