A horseback riding accident has claimed the life of a young child.
The Mercer County Sheriff's Office tells 27 NEWSFIRST it happened as 5-year-old Caden Moon rode with family members on Eagle's Nest Trails in Harrodsburg around 6:30 Sunday night.
A deputy says the horse stumbled causing Moon to fall. They say the horse subsequently rolled on the boy.
The boy's family rushed him to Harrodsburg, in their own vehicle. Law enforcement intercepted it on Industry Road and EMS took Moon on to James Haggin Memorial Hospital in Harrodsburg, where he was pronounced dead at 7:30pm. The Mercer county Coroner's Office says the child died due to head trauma.
"It's difficult," explained Pastor Doug Wesley of Hopewell Baptist Church, who knows the family well. "The tragedy effects not just the family, but the entire community," Wesley continued with tears in his eyes.
Wesley says Caden spent the past week at vacation bible school at the church. He also says the family attended services Sunday morning.
"He was a good kid," Wesley said. "The kind of kid that all of us would like our child to be."
Moon's visitation will be Tuesday at Ransdell Funeral Chapel in Harrodsburg from 5-8p.m. The funeral will be at the chapel Wednesday at 1 p.m.
