House still working on legislative redistricting

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) - Lawmakers are continuing to work on a House redistricting plan that could get a vote in coming weeks.

House Speaker Greg Stumbo said he's hopeful a bill can be passed before the Legislature adjourns late next month. The Senate, meanwhile, is waiting until next year to do a similar redrawing of its political boundaries.

Redistricting legislation that passed last year generated political turmoil and was later struck down by the state Supreme Court. Justices found the new districts weren't balanced by population and didn't comply with the "one person, one vote" mandate in federal and state law.

Redistricting is supposed to occur every 10 years to account for population changes found by the U.S. Census Bureau.
