LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - The deadly bus crash in Carroll County Monday may have you wondering, just how safe are my children on a school bus?

WKYT talked to Fayette County Public Schools leaders about bus safety and what they're doing to protect children.

Each weekday morning, Fayette County school leaders buckle up nearly 700 students between the ages of three and four. It's the same age group of the children involved in Monday's deadly Carroll County bus wreck. FCPS Transportation Director John Kiser says older students, ones taking buses bigger than the ones used in Head Start programs, don't wear belts. They aren't required by law.

"The large school bus is probably safer the way it is rather than having lap belts," explains Kiser, "if we use just the lap belt, sure that's going to secure the lower torso, but the head then will be free to move forward."

WKYT pulled the most recent numbers. In the 2010-2011 school year, there was one death due to a bus wreck.

"The only thing that we want to avoid more than whatever is on the road is a tree off the road," says Kiser. Bus drivers in Fayette County are trained not to swerve to avoid things in the road. They say it's more dangerous to swerve and end up over correcting than it is to hit whatever is in their path.
