Hurricane Sandy crosses Jamaica; kill 2 in Caribbean

KINGSTON, Jamaica (AP) - Jamaican police say Hurricane Sandy has killed another person.

An elderly man died when he was crushed by a boulder that rolled onto his clapboard house. Earlier today, a woman in nearby Haiti was swept away by a rushing river she was trying to cross.

Meteorologists say the hurricane's eye is now off Jamaica's northern coast, but rain and winds continue to pound the island. Hurricane conditions are predicted to last well into the night.

Sandy is a Category 1 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 85 mph.

Forecasters say it's likely Sandy will produce tropical storm conditions along the southeastern Florida coast, the Upper Keys and Florida Bay by Friday morning. A tropical storm watch is in effect for the area.

Meanwhile, far out in the Atlantic, Tropical Storm Tony poses no threat to land. Its center is more than 1,000 miles west-southwest of the Azores.
