Inspectors issue 50 citations to 3 coal companies

LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) - The U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration says inspectors have issued 50 citations to three coal companies in Kentucky for alleged health and safety violations.

The Lexington Herald-Leader reports that the violations were found during special inspections in February.

The mines targeted for "impact inspections" were the Nally & Hamilton Enterprises Bear Branch surface mine in Leslie County; Armstrong Coal Company's Lewis Creek underground mine in Ohio County; and the Redhawk No. 1 underground mine in Floyd County, operated by Redhawk Mining LLC.

Inspectors issued 31 citations at the Nally & Hamilton mine, 16 to Armstrong Coal and three to Redhawk Mining.

The inspections began in 2010 after the Upper Big Branch Mine explosion in West Virginia that killed 29 coal miners.
