Investigators still looking for arsonist, 10 months after fire

Updated: Sun 1:06 PM, Feb 03, 2013

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT)-Arson Investigators are still looking for the person or people responsible for setting fire to the Village Idiot Restaurant. They say at this point, they're afraid the one-year anniversary will pass without any arrests in the case.

Arson Investigators say they do believe someone connected to the business is to blame.

"This crime was not a random act of vandalism," Arson Investigator John Blanton said. "It was a well thought out plan, a calculated event."

Fire crews swarmed the historic building on West Short Street in the early morning hours of April 23rd, trying to save what they could.

The restaurant was weeks away from opening at the time. Right now, the only clue is some grainy surveillance video from a business across the street---showing a shadowy figure breaking into the front door.

"An unknown person approaches the business; he or she is carrying two large duffel bags. Several minutes later, we were called to respond to the fire," Lt. Blanton explained.

Police say their leads have gone from cold to non-existent.

"If anyone knows anyone, please call. Any tips, any information could lead to an arrest."

Investigators say they have interviewed dozens of people, including employees, but have not been able to pin the crime to a person of interest.

Crimestoppers is offering a cash reward for information leading to an arrest. Call 859-253-2020. It's a free call and it is anonymous.
