LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT) - Laurel County Sheriff's Deputies got more than they bargained for when they responded to a report of a stuck semi-truck Tuesday morning.
It turned out the truck driver walked away from a halfway house.
"Apparently, he had stolen the truck. It was found in a parking lot in Louisville with the keys in the ignition. He just jumped in the truck and drove it to Laurel County," said Deputy Gilbert Acciardo.
It all started around 3 A.M. when the sheriff's office responded to a report of a semi stuck in a ditch on Chaney Ridge Road, north of London.
Deputies tell us the driver ran off when they arrived on scene. After a short chase and scuffle, deputies arrested Curtis Brewer, 35, of London. Investigators say Brewer told them he had taken a large amount of meth.
Deputies quickly discovered Brewer had escaped custody from a facility in Louisville where he was serving a 10-year sentence for burglary. Brewer had been on the run for three days.
His sentence stems from a crime in June. Acciardo says Brewer was caught loading items from a home on Cliff's Edge Road in to a trailer. They say he also wrote an apology note to the victim.
"In law enforcement, you see something new everyday. That's something new for the books," said Acciardo.
In Laurel County, Brewer is now charged with operating a motor vehicle under the influence, fleeing or evading police, second degree on foot, resisting arrest, menacing, and receiving stolen property $10,000 or more.
He also faces and escape charge out of Jefferson County.
Brewer is being held in the Laurel County detention facility.
