JESSAMINE COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT) - She’s been through a lot already-- a Jessamine County teenager has been battling cancer for years and needs a new kidney.
We’ve been telling you about Brianna Palmer's story since last fall, and next week she'll receive a kidney transplant.
The Jessamine County teen doesn't turn fourteen until July but Brianna’s family and friends celebrated her birthday a little early on Thursday.
“She’s about to go through a big ordeal so we wanted to try to make this birthday was extra special,” said Brandon Palmer, Brianna’s stepfather.
But the big party isn't the only present Brianna’s stepfather is giving her this year.
“I was lucky enough to be able to give her a kidney,” Palmer said.
It’s a gift Brianna has been waiting for ever since she learned she had kidney failure more than a year ago.
“The chances that I would be a match not being her biological parent-- we didn’t know if it was going to happen or not.”
But Brandon says once he learned he qualified as a match, donating his kidney to his stepdaughter was a no-brainer.
“Technically she’s my stepdaughter but by all rights she’s my daughter. Any parent would help their kid if they had the opportunity.”
Although the transplant surgery is just a few days away, the duo says neither of them is nervous because they know the outcome will be worth it.
“We're almost excited about it, ready to get it over with and kind of start everything fresh. It will be great to have her healthy for the first time in a long time.”
He says after the surgery, Brianna will be his biological daughter because of the special bond that the two of them will share.
