Woman dies jogging in heat

Updated: Mon 9:02 PM, Jul 02, 2012

Wynonna Padgett’s thoughts were on her friend, Patricia Hicks, Monday.

“Her ability to help you through anything..we called her 'Dr. Trish,' when you had a problem, she was easy to talk to,” said Padgett. Padgett works for Clear Channel Radio in Somerset and the two helped coordinate a number of music related events in the area. Beyond that, they were simply very close friends.

The 40-year-old mother of two was out jogging Friday morning near her Green Acres home in Monticello when she collapsed. Daniel Jackson saw her in the road and tried to help her. “I ran down the road and never could get a pulse. So I called 911 and started CPR,” said Jackson.

The Wayne County Coroner says it could be several more weeks before they know how Patricia Hicks died. They know it’s not foul play, it could still be health or weather related.

Coroner Forrest Hicks says it was 84 degrees and 58% humidity at the time of her death. Ironically, friends say Hicks chose the early morning time to run to escape the heat during the late afternoon, when she usually ran.

Hicks worked in banking in Somerset and was active in Relay for Life and the Rock Somerset organization, which helped kids find meaningful activities. She was apparently gearing up for a marathon in Memphis for St. Jude's Hospital.

“She was a friend. And if she was your friend she was a friend for life. She loved you like family,” said Padgett.

The funeral for Hicks is set for 4pm Tuesday at the Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Monticello.
