HAZARD, Ky. (WYMT) - This Sunday marked the third week of August, also known as Coal Miner Appreciation Week in Kentucky.
Pike and Perry Counties are in the top three coal producing counties.
A former miner, Perry County Judge Executive Denny Ray Noble said with all the recent layoffs, they appreciate coal miner's, even when they are not working.
"The people really don't know how important it is for the coal companies to be working in this area because there's no other jobs," said Noble.
"If the mines leave, everything will have to shut down."
Pike County Judge Executive Wayne T. Rutherford told us coal miner's are the "heroes of america."
Both judge executives said many Kentucky coal miners have headed to W. Va. to find work. They said they hope the recent ruling in favor of the coal industry agains the Environmental Protection Agency will get these miners back to work.
