Belongings from foreclosed house stop traffic

Updated: Tue 8:03 PM, Feb 05, 2013

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - After a Lexington home was foreclosed upon, piles of belongings from what officials call a hoarding situation were piled up on the sidewalk.

After home near the corner of Broadway and 5th Street was foreclosed on recently, workers put much of what was inside out onto the curb.

Lexington Police said they worked a fender bender caused by the pile. They say someone was looking at the items and ran into the car in front of him.

Fayette County constables guarded the belongings while the workers took all the items out of the house. The homeowner had 48 hours to claim them, but after that, it became a shopping spree.

"I found an American flag, which was wrapped up in a box. Nobody was wanting it, but I feel like it's the most important piece out here," said Army veteran Larry Bartlett.

Others were just hoping to brighten the day for their families.

"I got a couple of Elmos and a ball for my grandchildren who come and spend time with me on the weekend," said Gerri Fawcette.

Others hoped to turn misfortune into money, and stocked up on all the metal they could find.

"You ride around and you see something and you throw it in the back of your truck and you make a couple hundred dollars a day. That's good money for somebody that ain't got a job," said Paul Shaw.

After 48 hours, any remaining items will be removed. The constables said in most cases like this, the homeowners already removed any items they wanted to take with them.
