KSP investigating officer-involved shooting in Knott County

KNOTT COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT) - Kentucky State Police are investigating after an officer-involved shooting occurred in Knott County.

State Police say it took place in the Pine Top community around 6:30 Thursday night.

In an press release, police say troopers were called to a home on Nealy Creek Road after receiving multiple calls of a man walking down the road with a gun, threatening to shoot anyone who came near his residence.

According to police, the first trooper to arrive on scene attempted to negotiate with the man, but was unsuccessful. They say the trooper specified that the man kept his hands behind his back and refused to bring them in view. As another trooper arrived, police say the man started threatening both troopers and stated he would kill them. They say the man then started to bring his right arm around in an aggressive fashion toward the troopers. Police say this is when one of the troopers fired three shots and hit the man twice. They say both troopers attempted to provide medical aid, but the man died before an EMS arrived.

As this time, State Police say they are in the preliminary stages of their investigation. The names of the two troopers and victim involved have not been released.

State Police say both of the troopers involved have been placed on administrative leave. Police say this is standard protocol for any trooper involved in a deadly force incident.
