LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - It’s becoming a more popular sport all over the world and now one of the top ranked CrossFit athletes is right here in Lexington!

Jennifer Smith is preparing for a major competition and on Wednesday, her friends and family gathered for a special send off.

“We are one big family so it’s a big deal for us to have one of our family members go and compete out in California,” said Nathan Spitz, who is Smith’s part-time trainer.

On Thursday, Smith will travel cross-country to compete in the 2013 Reebok CrossFit Games where the world's fittest athletes will be put to the test over a week of rigorous athletic events.

“It’s a huge sense of accomplishment that I’ve made it this far so I’m just excited to even be here,” Jennifer Smith said.

The competition is designed to test a person's overall fitness in as many different domains as possible.

“They test strength, power, endurance, speed and agility. All of those are tested over the course of three days,” Spitz said.

Smith has competed internationally before but this year will be a little different.

“The past three years I’ve competed with a team and at least five other people have been cheering me on but everyone is behind me 100% even though I am competing individually this year.”

After dedicating her blood, sweat and tears to training for this competition, she says it's finally time to let the games begin.
