Keeping your home safe during State Street celebrations

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - Not everyone living near State Street is a student, a family has seen every party in the area the last 10 years. After every big Kentucky win in the NCAA Tournament, Tom Akins sits in his front yard, and monitors the crowd.

"As long as I'm out here, I don't end up with all the beer bottles and stuff," said Akins.

He lives on Crescent Avenue, both State Street and University Avenue feed in to it.

"You respect the kids, they respect us," explained Atkins.

He hasn't experienced any property damage since they moved in.

A fence in his driveway helps curb the crowds. The retired veteran wants students to enjoy themselves, but not at the expense of his property.

"With somebody here. We don't have to worry about it as much," said Atkins.

Akins doesn't know what to expect now that Kentucky is in the Final Four, but he does know he'll be on his lawn, watching students celebrate.

He says he and his wife are the only non-students living in the State Street area.
