Posted: Fri 4:41 PM, Dec 28, 2012

LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) - Kentucky American Water, which serves Lexington and other communities, is asking for a rate increase that would raise average monthly residential bills by 17 1/2 percent, or $5.76, to $38.51 per month.

The company said in a statement it filed the request Friday with the Kentucky Public Service Commission based on capital investments of approximately $58 million made since last seeking a rate increase nearly three years ago. The request would increase total annual revenue by approximately $12.3 million.

Kentucky American says the improvements include upgrades to water distribution systems and to water treatment plants.

The company has approximately 500,000 customers in parts of 10 Kentucky counties.
