LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) - A Kentucky National Guardsman is being awarded a Silver Star for actions he took while deployed in Afghanistan.

A statement from the Kentucky National Guard office says Maj. Gen. Edward W. Tonini will present Capt. Shannon Ison with the award during a ceremony on Sunday at the Galt House in Louisville. Ison was deployed to Afghanistan in 2008 with the 206th Engineer Battalion.

The Silver Star is the military's third-highest award for valor.
