Kentucky Theater to reopen after projection upgrade

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - A historic Lexington theater is receiving a 21st century upgrade.

The Kentucky Theater, which has been showing movies since the 1920's, is now going digital.

The theater will reopen on Friday, after being closed for four days to change over from 35 millimeter film to digital projection.

"We're looking toward the future. We're anxious and excited," says Fred Mills with the Kentucky Theater.

The theater says it was time to make the change because many movies won't be made on the old 35 millimeter film.

"I think you have to change with the times," Mills says. "If you don't you get left behind. In this particular case, if we didn't make the change, we'd be out of business. We certainly want the Kentucky Theater to go on forever."

Friends Of The Kentucky Theater are helping with the conversion by raising the money through private funds.

The theater says the next wave of improvements may likely include fresh paint and carpeting.
