Kentucky Theatre prepares to close auditorium for renovation

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - Kentucky Theatre die-hards crowded into the lobby Sunday afternoonfor a classic movie screening, but it wasn't just any day.

"Feels a little bit strange closing down. I love seeing the theater full of people," said manager Fred Mills.

For about eight weeks, the theater will be closed for a facelift.

"You know this building is 92 years old and I think it's deserving of a little bit of a new look," Mills said.

The theater got its new digital projector not long ago. Now, they'll focus on the carpet and seating, something moviegoers are definitely in favor of.

"Definitely needed. the seats were starting a broken down. They definitely need to be improved," said Bill Fosdick.

The changes won't just be inside the theater, they'll also restore the signature marquee in front.

"I think it's needed, I just hope that doesn't got too modern," Fosdick said.

The Kentucky does have a second theater, the State Theatre, that will stay open through the renovation. Mills says it's important for them to upgrade without taking away from the theater's historic atmosphere.

"A lot of people have their own particular Kentucky theater story. Their first date was here, some of them got married here," Mills said.

The final event before the renovation will be the premiere of the locally-produced movie, "Pleased to Meet Me" Sunday evening at 7.
