LEXINGTON, Ky (WKYT)- Kentucky Utilities set an all-time usage record Monday night during the extreme cold temperatures.

KU says it customers hit a peak of 5,027 megawatts around 9 p.m. Monday night. Temperatures were below zero at the time with wind chills at times between -20 and -25.

KU is continuing to ask customers to voluntarily conserve power during the cold snap.

KU officials are giving the following tips for customers to conserve power:

-Adjust your thermostat to lowest comfortable setting.
-If you're going to be gone for more than four hours turn the thermostat down several degrees as well.
-Reduce reliance on other heating sources.
-Wear extra layers such as a sweatshirt or sweater.
-Add extra blankets to the bed.
-Close the fireplace damper and doors when not in use unless you have a gas fireplace.
-Use draft stoppers for windows and doors.
-Turn off all unnecessary lights and appliances.
-Run your dishwashers, dryers and washing machines only when full.
-Open curtains, drapes and/or blinds in the daytime to let the sun's heat in your home and close them at night to retain the heat.
-Furniture or drapes should not block air registers.
-Use a microwave oven or a slow cooker or prepare cold meals. -Microwaves use less than half the power of a conventional oven and cook food in about one-fourth the time.

KU has been working scattered power outages across the state since the cold snap began early Monday morning.

The previous all-time usage record was 4,640 megawatts set in January of 2009 when morning temperatures were also below zero.

KU customers also set an all-time usage record for a 24-hour period. From Monday morning to Tuesday morning, KU customers used 102,613 megawatt hours. The old record was in January 2010 when 97,321 megawatts were used in a 24 hour period.
