Kentucky city comes together for National Guard sendoff

It was an emotional morning for dozens of Kentucky families. The 2nd Battalion, 128th Field Artillery left Carlisle this morning, headed overseas.

Students from across Nicholas County began to line up around eight this morning. They joined hundreds of others who came out to show their love and support for 109 national guard members who are shipping off to Africa. During the nine months they are gone the soldiers will provide security.

The buses carrying the soldiers did a loop through town before heading off.

The county judge, mayor, local police and fire departments all worked with schools to get more than 1,200 kids out of school and on the streets.

"The kids have been so excited about it. Last week we prepared, everybody made signs to send them off, it's a wonderful lesson of patriotism for them," said Alicia Hughes who helped organize the sendoff.

The members of the 2nd/138th will join with two other units. In all 565 troops will be deploying on this mission.
