Kentucky lawmakers introduce gun control bill

FRANKFORT, Ky. (WKYT) - It's become a hot button issue following several mass shootings. Now, the gun control debate is heating up in Kentucky.

On Thursday, Representative Jim Wayne, of Louisville, and Representative Kathy Stein, of Lexington, introduced House Bill 265.

The bill would require background checks for gun buyers. Those background checks include people who buy guns at gun shows.

"It would also allow a judge to mandate those with mental illness can't have access," says Democratic Representative Jim Wayne

It would also give law enforcement to decide who can get assault rifles.

"These were rifles that were banned before 2004," says Representative Wayne. "We want to give the power back to law enforcement to determine who can get these types of guns."

Supporters in Frankfort wore the names of the victims of gun violence as lawmakers introduced the bill.

The lawmakers who introduced the bill will not have an easy time getting it passed.

"We are going to do everything we can to kill this bill to keep it from getting a vote and to protect the second amendment rights of all Kentuckians," says Republican Representative Jeff Hoover.
