NEW ORLEANS, La./LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - "Em? Can you hear me?" asks Jennifer Frederick over the phone to her twin sister Emily, in New Orleans, before asking how everything is going.
The two sisters are in different states, but they are doing their best to keep close as Hurricane Isaac hit Emily's home.
"The first question before we continue talking is, "Is everything okay?" So far, so good. Everything has been okay," said Emily in a phone interview.
Emily moved to Louisiana from Lexington and decided to ride out the storm. She stocked up on supplies and says she had power until sometime overnight. It hasn't returned since.
"You can tell people are getting a little stir crazy."
Of the two twins, Jennifer, who still lives in Lexington, admits to being more stressed about the hurricane.
"It's been a little stressful. I mean she's my twin sister and I don't know what I'd do without her," described Jennifer.
Emily was able to step onto her porch today and shot some video for her family to see in Kentucky.
"I've been really lucky, here, but a friend of mine whose tree outside hit her house and caved in through the roof, her balcony collapsed, and they had to bust the doors out to get out."
All day, she's been in constant contact with her family and friends. As they are depending on Emily's status updates and she's depending on them to pass on any news since the power and internet are out.
"It's been text messages just so she can conserve her phone battery. It's probably been six or seven times throughout the day," said Jennifer.
"A long with no electricity comes I can't check the internet, so I'm relying on people to let me know what's going on," added Emily.
Emily says she's heard from friends that power lines are down around parts of town, and trees toppled over. Yet she's thankful she still has phone service and running water, for now.
Still this Bluegrass native survived her first hurricane, and now she and her twin sister say they are both waiting for life to return to normal again.
