LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) - Nearly two months late, the Kentucky
Derby Festival's Great Steamboat Race finally got under way
Wednesday, and the hometown favorite Belle of Louisville took home
the Silver Antlers.
The race between the Belle of Louisville and the Belle of
Cincinnati had been scheduled for Kentucky Derby week, but was
delayed by high water in the Ohio River.
Hundreds gathered to board the boats and watch them take off,
The Courier-Journal reported.
The Great Steamboat Race was originally scheduled for May 4. The
Derby Festival says the race was first held in 1963, was canceled
once, in 1967, and was rescheduled in 1966 and 1983 due to high
water.
