MONTICELLO, Ky. (WKYT) - The Wayne County schools superintendent tells us a kindergarten student disappeared this afternoon because she was "bored with school."

A police officer found the girl front of the courthouse after she had walked about a mile away from Walker Elementary.

"I just want to go home. I am bored, I’m tired,” Wayne Roberts said the student told the officer of why she left the school about 2 p.m. Monday.

She left during a class change as some students were going to the restroom.

"This particular student had an opportunity to slip away and took advantage of that opportunity,” said Roberts.

Moments later, during a headcount the teacher realized the student was missing. The school was put on lock down and authorities were notified.

Ten minutes later, the officer found the student in front of the old courthouse and was taken home. The superintendent says the student was safe and sound, but now they say they’re working to ensure this never happens again.

“And the staff--the principal is working with staff in question, identifying ways that perhaps student supervision can be improved and addressed. Not that there was a problem before, but there is always an opportunity to improve,” said Roberts.

The Monticello police department is investigating the incident but they say no charges will be filed.

However, social services was notified of the incident. Police say the reason behind the walk away could have something to do with issues at home.
